As July begins, I find myself once again preparing to step into the role of guide and facilitator—this time for Off the Beaten Path, a small group travel program unfolding in the rugged, historic region of Northumbria, UK. Thoughtfully curated and rooted in connection, this upcoming journey blends cultural immersion, quiet reflection, and shared discovery in one of England’s most soulful landscapes.

In the days leading up to departure, I’ve been reflecting on the many ways people define a journey. Not just where we go—but how we choose to go. For some, it’s about rest and recovery; for others, adventure and challenge. Sometimes it’s as simple as a change of scenery, and other times, it’s an awakening.

Whether you’re traveling across the world or exploring your own backyard, the shape a journey takes is deeply personal—and each form offers its own kind of transformation.

The All-Inclusive Escape: Relaxation and Convenience

For many, a journey begins with a desire to unplug. All-inclusive escapes offer a carefree path—where food, fun, and logistics are handled for you. They provide comfort and relaxation without the effort of decision-making, giving space to breathe.

This type of journey is restorative and indulgent but often remains surface-level. It soothes the body but rarely stirs the soul.

The Tourist Trail: Exploring Landmarks and Checking Off Lists

Some journeys are about seeing what you’ve always dreamed of—those iconic places you’ve marked on a mental map for years. Tower Bridge, Hadrian’s Wall, Edinburgh Castle. The tourist path is full of these moments—postcard-perfect and thrilling.

This journey style is often structured and familiar, ideal for first-time visitors or those eager to check big items off a list. But the magic can fade quickly if we rush through without pause.

The True Traveler: Embracing the Spirit of Exploration

Then there are journeys that don’t follow a script. These are the ones where curiosity leads and plans shift. Where time slows down, and engagement runs deep. You meet people you’ll never forget. You lose track of the itinerary—and discover yourself in the process.

This is the spirit we hope to foster through Off the Beaten Path. It’s not about seeing everything. It’s about seeing something—really seeing it—and allowing that experience to reshape the way you think, feel, and move through the world.

The Hybrid Journey: Blending Leisure with Discovery

Increasingly, travelers seek balance. They want rest and depth. A hybrid journey offers both: slow mornings and bold afternoons, comfort paired with cultural exploration. Think spa days followed by castle ruins, or journaling after a shared meal with locals.

This is the rhythm of Off the Beaten Path. A slower pace. Intentional experiences. An invitation to discover while still holding space to simply be.

The Staycation: Rediscovering Your Own Backyard

And sometimes, a journey happens close to home. When you change your lens, the familiar becomes fascinating. A staycation can spark gratitude, surprise, and new understanding of the place you already call home.

Even our group’s journey to Northumbria—a region often overlooked in favor of London or Edinburgh—reflects this mindset. You don’t have to travel far to go deep. You just have to pay attention.

Travel in All Its Forms

A journey doesn’t have to fit a mold. It can be luxurious or humble, structured or spontaneous, near or far. What matters most is how deeply you choose to engage with it.

As we embark on our July 2025 Off the Beaten Path program, I hold this quote close:

“The most valuable journeys aren’t about where you go—but how deeply you’re willing to engage.”

That’s the heart of every experience I design—whether for students, small group travelers, or fellow seekers of something more. Wherever your path takes you this summer, may you show up fully, listen closely, and be changed by the journey.
